Burnishing is a finishing technique used in cabinetry to create a smooth, glossy surface on wood. Burnishing is achieved by rubbing the wood surface with a hard, smooth object, such as a piece of metal or a burnishing tool. The process compresses the wood fibers and creates a glossy surface by forcing the natural oils and resins in the wood to the surface. Burnishing is often used on high-end cabinetry and furniture to create a luxurious, polished finish.
In kitchen cabinets, burnishing is typically used on hardwoods such as oak, cherry, and maple. Burnishing can be done on both stained and natural wood finishes and can create a variety of effects depending on the type of wood and the level of burnishing. For example, burnishing can create a subtle sheen on natural wood finishes or enhance the depth and richness of stained finishes.
One of the advantages of burnishing is its durability. Because burnishing compresses the wood fibers and forces the natural oils and resins to the surface, it creates a hard, protective layer that can help to protect the wood from scratches, dents, and other types of damage. Additionally, burnishing can be done without the use of harsh chemicals or sealants, making it a more environmentally friendly finishing option for kitchen cabinetry.
