In woodworking, a dado is a slot or trench cut into the surface of a board, usually perpendicular to its length. Dados are commonly used in cabinet making to join shelves, dividers, and other components to the sides of a cabinet. The dado joint provides a strong, stable connection without the need for additional hardware, such as screws or nails.
When making a dado joint, the first step is to mark out the location of the dado on the workpiece. This can be done using a marking gauge or a combination square. Once the location has been marked, the next step is to cut the dado using a saw. A router or a dado blade on a table saw can also be used for larger dados.
Dado joints are popular in cabinet making because they are strong and relatively easy to create. They also provide a clean, streamlined look that is aesthetically pleasing. Dados can be made to fit a variety of widths and depths, making them versatile for a range of projects. In addition to cabinetry, dado joints are used in bookcases, shelving, and other types of furniture.
