Highlighting is a finishing technique used in kitchen cabinetry to create a contrasting effect on the surface of the wood. This technique involves applying a glaze or stain to the crevices or grooves of the cabinet doors or drawers, which accentuates the natural grain patterns of the wood. This gives the cabinets a distinct and rich look that adds character to the overall design of the kitchen. Highlighting can be done in a variety of colors to complement the color palette of the kitchen, and it can be applied to both stained and painted cabinets.
The highlighting process is typically done after the cabinet doors and drawers have been sanded and stained or painted. The glaze or stain is then applied with a brush or sponge, focusing on the areas where the grain patterns are more prominent. The excess glaze or stain is wiped off, leaving the color only in the crevices and grooves. This technique creates a depth and dimension to the surface of the cabinets that makes them stand out. The final step is to apply a protective coat of finish to the cabinets, which enhances the highlighting effect and provides durability.
Highlighting is a popular choice for kitchen cabinetry as it adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the space. It can be used to create a variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary, depending on the color and intensity of the glaze or stain. Highlighting is also a cost-effective way to enhance the look of kitchen cabinets without the need for extensive renovations or replacements. With the right color choice and application technique, highlighting can transform the look of a kitchen and make it feel more inviting and stylish.
