Inset doors and drawers are a type of cabinet construction where the doors and drawers are set flush with the face frame of the cabinet. This creates a sleek and seamless look that is popular in traditional and transitional kitchen designs. The door and drawer fronts are typically made of solid wood and can be customized with various types of paneling, such as raised or flat panels. Inset cabinets are more labor-intensive to construct and install than overlay cabinets, which partially overlap the face frame, but they offer a high-end look and are known for their durability and longevity.
One of the main advantages of inset doors and drawers is their precise fit. Because they sit flush with the face frame, there is very little room for error in the construction process. This means that the doors and drawers will fit perfectly and close smoothly every time, which is especially important for large, heavy doors that can sag over time. Inset cabinets also offer more usable space inside the cabinet box, since the face frame takes up less room than it does in overlay cabinets. This can be especially beneficial in smaller kitchens where space is at a premium.
Inset cabinets require special hinges that are designed to fit inside the cabinet and door frame. The hinges are concealed from view and are adjustable to ensure a perfect fit. Because of the precision required for inset cabinet construction, they tend to be more expensive than overlay cabinets. Additionally, the door and drawer fronts may need to be refinished periodically to maintain their appearance, as they are exposed to more wear and tear than overlay cabinets. However, many homeowners feel that the high-end look and durability of inset cabinets are well worth the investment.
