A hinge is a type of hardware used in kitchen cabinets that allows the door or lid to pivot on a fixed axis, allowing for smooth and easy opening and closing. Hinges come in many different types and styles, each with its own unique features and advantages. One of the most common types of hinges used in kitchen cabinets is the butt hinge, which is typically made of metal and features two flat plates that are joined together with a pin. Other types of hinges include concealed hinges, surface-mounted hinges, and European hinges.
Concealed hinges, also known as hidden hinges, are a popular choice for modern kitchen cabinets. As the name suggests, these hinges are hidden from view, creating a sleek and streamlined appearance. They are typically installed on the inside of the cabinet door and frame, allowing the door to open and close smoothly without any visible hardware. Surface-mounted hinges, on the other hand, are installed on the outside of the cabinet door and frame, making them visible when the door is closed. While not as aesthetically pleasing as concealed hinges, surface-mounted hinges are easy to install and adjust.
European hinges, also known as cup hinges, are a popular choice for modern, frameless cabinets. These hinges are typically installed on the inside of the cabinet door and feature a cup-shaped mounting plate that is screwed into the cabinet. The hinge itself is then inserted into the cup, creating a strong and secure connection that allows the door to open and close smoothly. One of the advantages of European hinges is that they offer a wide range of adjustment options, allowing for easy installation and precise alignment.
